Last year there was a lot of uproar in the media when Helen Mirren revealed in an interview that one franchise she would love to be involved in was The Fast and the Furious. After a lot of back and forth in interviews from herself and franchise star Vin Diesel, it looks like she finally got her wish.
Mirren is currently doing promotional interviews for her next film Eye in the Sky, and when speaking with Elle Magazine about her work, she gave them official confirmation that she’s joining the franchise. When they asked her about the kinds of films she wanted to do, she explained, “I want to be making film and theater, but film is particularly relevant. I like it to be serious. Of course, having said that I'm about to do Fast and Furious 8. But that's for the fun of it. So maybe that's what I want as well, some fun and some relevant, serious, important movies.”
She didn’t go into any further details about what kind of role she could be playing, but she did reiterate her love of driving, something she talked about when she first put out her public request to be in the films, as well as the importance of a good script, “I've always rather loved driving. I said, 'I'll be in it, but only if I'm allowed to drive if I do drive in it.' But we'll see. We'll see how it transpires. Film is a wonderful thing and it can be so many different things. I don't want to turn my back on any of the different ways movies can be. I love the movies. I love going to the films. I like very serious films, I love foreign films, and I love big, fun movies–as long as they're well made and they've got good scripts. That's the most important thing.”
Do you think she’ll be added to the cast on the side of the villainous character Charlize Theron is debuting? Or might we see her as part of the Toretto team up? Get your theory engines running and let us know.
The next installment of the Fast & Furious franchise is currently filming. The movie will land in theaters in April 2017. Mirren’s Eye in the Sky had a limited release after its turn on the film festival circuit earlier this year, but will make its debut in China at the end of the month. She’s also completed work on Collateral Beauty, which hits theaters in December.
